What is Pattern Hacking?
Pattern hacking means taking a base pattern and modifying it to create a new design. Instead of buying a new pattern for every style, you learn to transform what you have. A simple bodice can become a peplum top, a crop top, or a princess-seamed blouse.
Length Modifications
•Shorten: Draw a horizontal line at the desired length, add seam allowance, cut.
•Lengthen: Slash horizontally and spread to add length. Fill with paper.
•Crop: Turn a dress into a top. Mark the desired length, add hem allowance.
•Extend: Turn a top into a tunic or dress. Extend the center front/back and side seams.
1Always lengthen or shorten at the designated adjust lines (marked on most patterns)
2After adjusting length, re-true the side seams — they may need re-drawing
3Check that front and back pieces still match at the side seam
Style Modifications
•Add a collar: Draft a collar stand and collar piece, or use a collar block. Adjust the neckline seam allowance.
•Change neckline: Trace a new neckline (V-neck, scoop, boat) directly on the pattern. Add a facing that matches.
•Add pockets: Trace the pocket placement from the pattern piece. Cut pocket bags separately.
•Convert darts to seams: Slash through a dart to create a princess seam. Add seam allowance to both new edges.
•Add a waist seam: Slash at the waistline to create separate bodice and skirt. Add seam allowances.
💡 Tip: Start with one modification at a time. Making multiple changes simultaneously makes fitting problems harder to diagnose.
Creating Design Ease
- **Design ease** is extra room added beyond fitting ease for style. A fitted shirt has 5-8cm ease; an oversized shirt might have 20-30cm.
- To add design ease: Slash the pattern vertically and spread apart evenly
- To remove ease: Overlap the slash lines to reduce width
1Front and back pieces should gain/lose the same amount
2After adding ease, check that the armhole still matches the sleeve
3If adding significant ease, you may want to lower the armhole for comfort
💡 Note: Our patterns specify the design ease included. Check the finished garment measurements table to understand the intended fit before modifying.
